Last Day of the Ski Season in Sun Valley

Posted By on Sun, Apr 24, 2011 at 7:00 AM

This is it. Say goodbye to the winter of 2010-2011. Adios, farewell, later, adieu, don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. Today is the final day of the ski season at the Sun Valley Resort.

Despite the fact that the calendar reads well into spring, this winter hasn't wanted to let go, and while that fact may be frustrating for those of us who are more than ready for some sun and warmth, the late-season snow has been a blessing for the ski industry and skiers. Sun Valley even received a few inches of new snow out of recent storms, and resorts further east have gotten even more.

But regardless of how much snow is on the hill, all resorts must close at some point since there just aren't enough skiers to warrant keeping the lifts running. Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area closed earlier this month.

To mark the end of this season, Sun Valley is throwing a party at Warm Springs, including a costume contest from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.—with a prize of a 20-day ski pass up for grabs—and the Bridge to Bridge Boogie Fun Race beginning at 2:30 p.m. There's also live music, food and buy-one-get-one-free lift tickets.

Brundage Mountain Resort in McCall is still in the battle with weekend-only skiing for another few weeks, or until the snow gives out. The resort will run the lifts this weekend, as well as on April 30-May 1. Lifts will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

This not only means you can squeeze in just a few more runs before you break out the mountain bike for the season, but you can do it on the cheap. All kids age 11 and younger and seniors age 70 and older ski for free, while all other lift ticket prices have been reduced: $27 for ages 12-17, $45 for ages 18-69. If you have a season pass to any other ski area, you ski for free if you're age 17 or younger. Adults get a $5 discount.

All services will be open, with the exception of summit and mid-mountain food service, and merchandise in the retail store in the lodge is 50 percent off.
