Morning Owl Farm Launches Hyde Park Market on Saturday

Morning Owl Farm will launch their own Saturday market this morning in the courtyard of Dunia Marketplace in Hyde Park.

“We had participated in the downtown market for several years and absolutely love that market … the problem for us has always been the challenge of hours because we’re a very small farm—it starts too late for us," said Morning Owl Farm owner Mary Rohlfing.

The Morning Owl Farm Market will run every Saturday, rain or shine, through October, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 1609 N. 13th St. between Eastman and Brumback. They’ll offer a seasonal selection of fresh produce from their organic farm, veggie starts and duck eggs

"We’re going to sell our produce as it comes on… It’ll probably be the end of May before we really have any produce to sell," said Rohlfing. "This weekend, for instance, we’ll be bringing down about 500 tomato plants to sell. Next week, we’ll bring peppers; we’re trying to bring things as people should be planting them."

In addition, Morning Owl will also serve an array of their renowned quack quiches and hot duck-egg beignets with local honey.

“We’re going to have our beignet booth so people can wander over from the North End and get hot beignets,” said Rohlfing. “And I’m totally stoked about this: I’m doing a chicory coffee blend—which is really a New Orleans thing. That’s what you want with your beignets; you’ve got to have chicory coffee. I wasn’t able to do that easily at Capital City Public Market because of the competition with the coffee shops … Even in the North End, we don’t want to step on Java’s toes and I hardly think we are. We’re just offering something no other coffee shop even offers.”
