Need Something To Do Tuesday?

Posted By on Tue, May 17, 2011 at 6:00 AM

Back in January, chef Randy King entertained us all with tales of transforming rocks into weapons with copper wire stuck in an antler in Flintknapping: Even a Caveman Can Do It, a piece he wrote for BWs Rec section. Before setting out on his adventure to try his hand at turning rocks into weapons, he was warned that there would be bloodshed, and that leather gloves and safety goggles would be necessary to avoid serious bodily injury.

Sound like your idea of a good time? You are in luck, because today there is a flintknapping demonstration at the MK Nature Center. You can watch Scott Maxwell and Rick Laurent from the Sierra Club Middle Snake Group work their magic on chunks of obsidian to create tools and weapons.

This is a fun, family friendly event, so take the kids and the whole family can try their hands at flintknapping. The demonstration is at 6 p.m., and obsidian will be supplied. You bring the Band-Aids.
