Hollywood Market Closed

As the Idaho Statesman reported, the Hollywood Market, a longtime Boise institution at 1319 N. Eighth St., on the corner of Eighth and Resseguie streets, is closed. The sign on the door reads that the small shop is shuttered "due to illness," and while that sounds temporary, it may not be. The Statesman reported that the 95-year-old store owner, Margaret Lawrence, is currently living in an assisted-care facility and is under guardianship.

Allen Derr of Allen R. Derr and Associates was Lawrence's lawyer for many years. He doesn't know what the fate of the Hollywood Market will be, but like so many Boise residents, he has strong feelings about both the store and Lawrence.

"[Hollywood Market] is such an integral part of the North End and the city of Boise," Derr said. "Margaret is such a wonderful lady. And up until very recently, she worked every day."

In the decades that it was open, the Hollywood Market was the stuff of legend, but it was the small things—like the wicker basket on the counter filled with strips of paper like fortune cookie messages, each with a (misspelled) daily affirmation on it, which were free for customers to take—that made the store and its owner such a unique part of Boise.

The Hollywood Market was a quaint place to stop in for a piece of penny candy, groceries, a random household item or a cold beverage, but it also served as a soapbox for the socially conscious Lawrence—who made her less-than-favorable feelings about Boise mayors Brent Coles and Dave Bieter abundantly clear.

"Margaret is very much an individual," Derr said. "She's a lady of her convictions and had strong feelings about a lot of stuff."

And a lot of people have strong feelings about her and Hollywood Market. So next time you crack open a cold one, say a toast to Margaret Lawrence.
