The 40th anniversary Idaho Special Olympics concluded this weekend with more than 200 brand new athletes added to the mix. Basketball, track and field, aquatics and cycling were several of the many events that went on throughout the weekend.

The theme for this year’s games was Proud to Belong, an homage made to WWII veterans who fought valiantly for human rights in the 1940s. To commemorate their service in the military, the Nampa Warhawk Air Museum supplied an array of vintage planes, such as the P-51 and the P-40, to do a flyover for the opening ceremony.

“The weather was great,” said Special Olympics area director Delyn Porter about the games. “We had a larger turnout and the level of competition was better.”

The added participation from athletes, parents and benefactors made this year one for the record books and set a new standard for events in the future.
