Historic Facial Hair

Thank you Smithsonian Magazine for combining two of our favorite things: history and facial hair.

Tying its year-long commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War with popular culture's recent fascination with mustaches and beards, the magazine is asking the public to vote for the officer with the best Civil War facial hair. The online vote includes images of some truly spectacular hair, as well as brief histories of each of the candidates.

After viewing the photo gallery, we can't help but be both a little impressed and scared by the creativity that can apparently be shaved into the hair on a guy's face.
