How Rare are Rare Earth Elements?

In June, National Geographic highlighted something few of us know about but that nearly all of us depend on in some way: rare earth elements.

They're in everything from cell phones to laptops to robots—even your new hybrid car. But as things stand now, 97 percent of the world's supply is mined in China. Growing demand, as well as skyrocketing prices, means everyone is looking for new sources.

It just so happens that one of the most promising areas to find rare earth elements might just be in Idaho. BW's intrepid stringer Zach Hagadone is digging into what could be the future of REE in the Gem State. Check out the Aug. 17 edition of Boise Weekly for the full scoop.
