  • The quince once rivaled the apple in popularity among Americans before falling into relative obscurity.

We all know how food can act as a time machine, how a taste can instantly teleport you to a childhood picnic or a first date. For Boisean Dave Turner, quince jelly was the catalyst that shot him back in time.

“As a youngster, somewhere between 6 and 10, my grandmother used to make this quince jelly,” Turner told me while standing in his backyard under a couple of quince trees. “I never knew what a quince was; all I knew was it was the most marvelous-tasting jelly I ever had.”

In the Dec. 7 BW, I track Dave Turner’s decades-long search to recover the lost taste of his grandmother’s quince jelly, meet other Idaho quince aficionados and learn a lot about what was once one of America’s favorite fruits.
