Do Dorks Really Get the Girl, or is it Wishful Thinking?

Here's an interesting equation: The less attractive a man is and the hotter a woman is, the more he is proportionately confident in his chances at hooking up with her.

Let that one roll around in your head for a while.

According to a study that will soon be published in Psychological Science, the less attractive and dorkier a man is, the more he is likely to think that women can't help themselves around him. The full study is laid out in a story on, but basically, 200 straight college students participated in the study in which they ranked their own physical attractiveness, then went through a speed-dating-like event, after which they ranked how attracted their counterpart was to them.

The results showed that women who ranked highest on the babe-o-meter as judged by men were deemed most attracted to those men, especially by the men who were considered the least attractive by the women. At the same time, the men who were considered more attractive by women were a bit more in touch with just how much the women were actually interested in them.

The study also showed that the men women considered the least attractive ranked themselves rather high in their own assessments.

On the other side of the equation, the study found that women completely underestimated how sexually attracted the men were to them. Well, at least that part of the study should come as no surprise.
