A Year of Idaho Food Wraps Up

If Janie Burns and Amy Hutchinson hadn’t organized 2011: The Year of Idaho Food, I wouldn’t have had the chance to spend the last 12 months sipping gin at 8:30 in the morning, foraging for stinging nettles in the forests of McCall, riding in a big-ass wheat combine on the Palouse, sampling more fermented foods than I thought humanly possible or jet boating down the Salmon River in search of pioneer apples.

And that’s just for starters.

And yet, my weekly collaboration with the Boise Weekly and Boise State Public Radio to write food and farming stories under The Year of Idaho Food banner was just one feature of the project’s broader agenda.

The Year of Idaho Food also inspired legislative resolutions, bear meatloaf, book clubs, baby showers and a bunch of other projects that got participants closer to Idaho food and farming.

In the Wednesday, Jan. 4, edition of BW, I’ll take a look back at 2011: The Year Of Idaho Food.
