3rd Rail Jam Rocks Bogus Basin

Posted By on Mon, Feb 6, 2012 at 3:59 PM

While boarders and skiers at Bogus Basin weren't knee deep in fresh powder, the second 3rd Rail Jam to hit Boise was a slam dunk. At the base of the front side, a snow park including rails, jumps and one precariously placed tire became the playground for a group of intrepid young snow athletes.

As the competitors of the Under Armour-sponsored event hit the features, street artists Colin Pfeifer and Solomon "Hawk" Sahlein of Sector 17 hit the canvas with spray paint.

"It was nice," said Pfeifer. "We're having a great time. They totally called us up again; they wanted to have us up here."

Pfeifer and Sahlein provided their live art exhibition to the touring N.J.-based snow competition last year with tons of paint. This year, they tagged the snow ramps between tricks, bumping to hip-hop from local and Salt Lake City-based artists. With DJ Image on the turntables and Kosha Dillz as MC, funky beats echoed out over the snowy cliffs all afternoon.

Local Kobe Herrick, age 8, hit the rails with more skill than his diminutive form would suggest possible. Swathed in a numbered jersey two sizes too big, Herrick hit the slopes harder than his older competitors.

"He started when he was 3," said his father, Coit Herrick. "We knew about it from last year, and he really wanted to do the rail jam, so here we are."

While Herrick didn't walk away with a prize, the pint-sized boarder was a hard act to follow. The winners of outdoor gear swag and more than $500 total included Chris Fowler, Logan Moyer, Justin "Juice" Kennedy and two-time winner Alexi Micinski from the women's class.
