Whitney Houston Memorial Haikus

Posted By on Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 3:33 PM

Whitney Houston was one of pop's boldest voices and biggest train wrecks.

The gospel-trained singer released a string of mega-hits like "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," "Saving All My Love For You," "Greatest Love of All," and her reboot of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You," for the soundtrack of The Bodyguard, a film she starred in with Kevin Costner. She also signed the largest record deal in history in 2001: $100 million for six albums.

But after that, something started to go wrong. She retreated into a life that, from media reports, seemed to revolve heavily around drug use and domestic violence at the hands of her husband, singer Bobby Brown. Her public appearances were erratic and disheveled. Her voice was inconsistent. Her appearances on the Bravo reality show about her husband were unflattering, at best. And an interview she did with Barbara Walters resulted in her insisting over and over again that she didn't smoke crack, though she admitted in a later interview with Oprah that she had.

Though she divorced Brown and tried to get clean, Houston's attempt at a comeback was not well-reviewed and she continued to struggle with her recovery, canceling many performances.

Houston was found dead in a Hollywood hotel on Feb. 11.

As is BW's tradition with notable deaths, we asked our readers to submit memorial haikus. They are compiled below. Any additional haikus can be left in the comments box.

Jessica Flynn
A girl's velvet voice.
Stardom, fame, booze & then drugs.
A-hole Bobby Brown

Brenda K. Bentley
Beyond talented
Drugs and the wrong man too young
Left us much too soon

Katherine Sorell Thornton
She danced too young with
fame, love and drugs but
had a sweet voice from above

Tacey Marie Arnold
Mesmerizing beauty
Pipe dreams and wasted talent
Picked the wrong somebody to dance with and love

Jo Shively
Your music moved us.
You had so much more to sing.
Demons took you home.

Rob Christensen
You touched the clouds above.
You often shared with us your love.
Pain released to the Dove.

Emily Walton
Beautiful smile
Deserved more than Bobby Brown
We'll always love you

Boise No Pants Day
Never wild, but green,
Sanka knows all flat shelters.
Angry, she accepts.

Kristi Swanson
Whitney died
Now I have to hear about it
All fucking week long
