BCT Hits Fund-Raising Goal for Off The Record

Boise Contemporary Theater met its goal today of raising $10,000 via a Kickstarter campaign to fund its upcoming production of Off The Record, by local actor-playwright Lynn Allison—but a little extra never hurts.

It's the second time BCT has taken the online-funding route, using the crowd-funding mechanism to raise roughly $11,000 for last season's The Krumblin Foundation by local theater legends Joe Golden and Tom Willmorth.

"It's a different way to energize our donors," said BCT managing director Helene Peterson. "It allows us to reach donors who might not be able to donate to us otherwise."

Peterson said the projects BCT selects for crowd-funding have to have a strong local connection and be productions that are unique within the season. Off The Record definitely meets those criteria: Not only is Allison a very familiar face on Boise stages thanks to her work with both BCT and Idaho Shakespeare Festival, but the play follows what happens after a run-in between a U.S. senator and an undercover cop in an airport men's room ... ring any bells? It's also the world premiere of the play and Allison's first as the author.

BCT raised $10,160 pledged from 113 donors as of this afternoon, beating its deadline of 2:57 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 29. But even though the goal has been met—guaranteeing the company will get all of the money pledged—additional donations will still be accepted through the deadline.

So, what do donors get in exchange for ponying up some cash besides the satisfaction of helping the arts? Anyone who donates at least $5 gets a thank-you note from Allison. Those who donate at least $25 will be listed in the program as a supporter. Anyone who donates $50 or more will get an invite to a special rehearsal and reception. For $100 or more, you get a signed copy of the script, while the $250 or more mark nets you a three-hour acting workshop with director Dwayne Blackaller. Got $500 or more to donate? You'll get six tickets, two bottles of wine and some munchies to partake in during the show. Need the ultimate theater experience? A $1,000 or more donation will get you all of the above, as well as a special dinner party with the cast, director and playwright.

Off The Record starts its previews on Wednesday, April 4, with opening night on Saturday, April 7.
