25 Days of Treefort: Owlright

Boise’s “blip-step” phenomenon Owlright is comprised of Geoff Belcher and Eric Haven, a pair of dub fans who are fond of diddling MIDI controllers serendipitously in pop-up tents. (This is the same band that missed a Feb. 24 performance at the Red Room because members were snowed in at a rural Idaho cabin/music studio.)

Owlright has played alongside local luminaries like Shades, Atomic Mama and Teens, and was featured in Nylon magazine.

The fuzzy electronica on Owlright's album Cool Shoos Dood is sometimes frantic and sometimes chunky, creating an album that strolls down a labyrinth’s worth of avenues. While individual tracks are often meandering, they always feature sections that demand ass-shaking and glow sticks. At past live shows, the Owlright gang has sported painted cardboard headdresses, which transformed the band members into dripping-fanged robots.

Whether you call it “nu funk,” “turbo crush” or “blip-step,” Owlright’s claim to fame is pulse-pounding electronica that hammers an audience's ear drums. On Friday, March 23, the duo will play the Treefort Music Fest afterparty in the Owyhee Plaza ballroom from 10-10:50 p.m.
