Treefort: BW Catches Up With WHY? Backstage

Upstairs at the Linen Building members of WHY? sipped white wine and ate Pie Hole pizza while chatting about Treefort, the dangers of flying and some Meridian family members.

"They were probably walking around like, 'We know WHY?'" laughed Liz Wolf, pianist and one fourth of the Berkeley, Calif. band.

Alongside her husband Josiah Wolf, his brother Jonathan "Yoni" Wolf and guitarist Doug McDiarmid, WHY? laid down its characteristically heartfelt rock tracks. The Treefort Main Stage audience sung in chorus with Yoni's monotone lyrics.

The quartet flew over from Seattle on a propeller-driven aircraft. Liz said she hates flying.

"She always keeps a little cyanide tablet in the side of her mouth," said Josiah.

Back stage after the set, the gang rushed to drop gear off at its hotel digs. Boise Weekly caught up with the gang at the Linen Building, where members echoed the sentiment that the band's first Boise show had been a success.

"This is the new Athens; Athens is done," joked Josiah. "This isn't even the new Athens, this is the new New York. Or maybe this is the new Boise."

At the bar, members used a handful of the dozens of drink tickets the bands were given by the festival. Josiah got a vodka tonic and a refill of white wine for Liz. They checked out the Treefort schedule, unsure of what to see next before they fly back on Saturday morning.

"I don't want to go there because I can't dance," said McDiarmid, referring to the Owyhee Plaza afterparty. "I guess if there's enough sweaty dudes they'll move me around like I'm dancing."
