  • Conductor Robert Franz will helm the new Picnic at the Pops outdoor concert series.

Over three days in August and September, the Boise Philharmonic will launch a new outdoor concert series called Picnic at the Pops at Eagle River Pavilion. The outdoor event will welcome casual dress, families and, of course, picnics.

Robert Franz, Philharmonic music director, said plans for Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture could include a live cannon.

"We're doing the 1812 Overture in its original form," said Franz. "That means an orchestra, the Eagle High School marching band and even cannons. We'll shoot something, but we haven't confirmed cannons yet."

Franz said he once did the performance in rural Kentucky, where a contingent of rifleman provided gunshots for the piece's crashing crescendo. The Saturday, Sept. 1, performance, titled "Patriotic Pops," includes Tchaikovsky's piece as a red, white and blue Labor Day tribute.

"The marching band will be in the grass area, so it will be like surround sound," said Franz.

A central stage will sit at the back of the grass field, with table seating available beside the stage. Chair and lawn seating will be behind that, with VIP tents available for groups. The Eagle River Pavilion's capacity is 4,000.

The Saturday, Aug. 18, pops performance features Gershwin's classics from Girl Crazy, Porgy and Bess and more; while Saturday, Aug. 25, features music from The Sorcerer's Apprentice, The Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter and others.
