Superheroes Vs. The Rabble in Seattle

Posted By on Wed, May 2, 2012 at 11:32 AM

May Day featured a nationwide series of protests and actions on issues ranging from the general anarchist howl against all things non-anarchist to a group of high-school students concerned about education cuts that Portland, Ore., Mayor Sam Adams invited inside to use the bathroom at City Hall.

But some of Tuesday's strangest news came from Seattle, where, according to The Stranger, protesters got a facefull of pepper spray courtesy of self-described superhero Phoenix Jones.

From the post:

1:43 pm: Cienna Madrid reports, "I ran into Slog commenter Baconcat, who was pepper sprayed by Phoenix Jones. Baconcat was taking pictures at the courthouse and Phoenix was screaming at the group, 'I'm not against you guys, I'm here to keep the peace and protect this historic building,' and then took them out with pepper spray. Baconcat says his eyes are dry as hell." Tear gas went off shortly thereafter; it's unknown if the tear gas belongs to the "superhero," too. "Beware: Phoenix Jones is still on the loose. But it's still peaceful here in Westlake."

Here's a photo of Jones and "his ward," on patrol.

Jones, who we previously mentioned for errant pepper-spraying, disputed the claim in a tweet.

To BW's knowledge, no self-proclaimed superheroes went rogue on the streets of Boise.

Though it is likely just coincidence that it happened the same day, a video has just been posted to Youtube by Rex Velvet, a self-proclaimed supervillian aiming to rid Seattle of Phoenix Jones so the police can better do their job.

Aside from it being somewhat obvious that Velvet is less against the concept of law and order than he is the concept of vigilante justice, this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone well versed in superhero mythology as the existence of heroes generally pre-dates, and is often responsible for, the rise of supervillains.

It was even predicted in real life in an article in Willamette Week about other self-proclaimed superheroes, one of whom was mysteriously attacked by a masked assailant while on patrol.
