Australian Fishermen Find Rare Giant Squid

Posted By on Thu, Jun 7, 2012 at 9:30 AM

Giant squid, aka "the kraken," have existed in legend for about as long as sailors have been telling stories. But as they live in extremely deep water, they are not likely to be seen alive, and when found dead, they are generally too decomposed to be identified.

The existence of giant squid was actually only confirmed in the eyes of science in 2005, when Japanese researchers caught photos of one on a camera 3,000 feet beneath the ocean.

But this week, footage of a freshly dead giant squid was shot by fishermen off the coast of Australia. It was still a juvenile, only 12 feet long and missing many of its tentacles, mostly likely from a battle with a sperm whale. And even in this state of decay—a shark starts chewing away at the corpse during the footage—it is still one of the best images we currently have of the mythic creature.
