While the idea of discriminating against people is generally reviled, many aren't aware that dogs and cats in shelters face a similar challenge. Black dogs and cats are often euthanized at shelters because they're passed up for lighter-colored pets, due to superstitions (think black cats and Friday the 13), fear (black dogs are mean) and other factors.

Today you can help bring awareness to the plight of black dogs and cats in shelters by participating in the Independence Black Dog Walk. Bring your pet (whatever color) or just yourself and meet in the grassy area in front of the Ram on Parkcenter Boulevard at noon. Walk for however long you please along the Boise River, get dog training tips from Bad Behavior, Good Dog and dog food samples from H3 Pet Foods. Ted Coe will provide some tunes and you just may score a raffle prize, such as a stay at Camp Bow Wow (for your furry friend, of course).

Walks occur monthly. Visit Spay Neuter Idaho Pets' website and Facebook page for more info.
