Slideshow: Seventh Annual Bars and Stripes Racers Beat the Heat

Boise Weekly events have a reputation for boozing. And Bars and Stripes, our annual alley cat race, was no exception.

Promptly at 3:15 p.m., alley catters were allowed to tear into their manifests, which detailed a series of locations they had to hit up. Hopping on their steeds, 96 racers mapped out the quickest route to each stop and downed a total of three drinks.

Temperatures hovered near 100 sweltering degrees for most of the day as racers haphazardly skidded up to Boise bars, including R Bar, Liquid, The Crux, The Gamekeeper Lounge, Sandbar Pub and Grill, Willow Lane Softball Field and Player's Pub and Grill.

Just near the Boise River in Garden City, cyclists rounded the corner by Joe's Crab Shack at high speeds, hopping off their seats to dash to the bar. There they grabbed a quick signature and took a shot of the hard stuff.

More than one racer asked the bartender if they could jump in the Riverside Hotel's pool, but they were informed they should use the river to cool off.

At The Crux, BW News Editor George Prentice quizzed racers with American citizenship test questions, while intern Tabitha Bower held down the fort at Player's Pub and Grill—this year's Coldest Beer winner—where she had racers pose as The Dude from Big Lebowski.

Back downtown at Ninth and Miller streets, racers assembled at the final stop—a big parking lot block party, with booze provided by Ninkasi, ice cream and food from RiceWorks food truck.

Coming in first place in the men's division was Art Widmar, followed by Logan Barclay and Ian Falconer. Maggie Schumacher took first on the ladies' side, followed by Jamie Parham and Courtney Brown.

All of the top Bars and Stripes racers took home cash prizes, and some major bragging rights.
