New Indoor Facility Offers Year-Round Golf Experience

Golf can be a tricky sport in Idaho. During the summer, golf addicts have to withstand the overbearing heat, and in the winter, depending on the weather, golf may not be an option—period.

But now, there's a new option.

This week marked the opening of Boise's newest indoor golf center, Idapro, a 2,800-square-foot facility located at 333 S. Capitol Blvd. Owners Steve Vanhorn and Paul Maudlin offer customers a chance to play golf without the hassle of searching for lost balls or enduring the elements.

"We're both just golfers—frustrated golfers—that were tired of playing all summer, getting halfway decent, and then winter comes along, and you've got to hang it up for three or four months, then you lose all your touch and everything that you've developed," said Steve Vanhorn.

Offering "the ultimate year-round golf experience," Idapro offers five simulators, including putting and a sand bunker. This week was a soft opening while the crew sorted out some software issues. Customers are being encouraged to drop by as beta testers. If you need a club or two, rentals are available, although Vanhorn encourages people to bring their own to develop a swing based on a consistent set of clubs.

In upcoming weeks, Idapro plans to offer lessons from Evision, as well as swing analysis using the software developed by swing coach Rick Smith. The camera will be capable of capturing body stance and movement throughout the motion. The system will automatically identify and report any swing faults found at a number of key positions, and the lines showing ideal swing plane, hand/club location, and head movement are automatically drawn.

A date has yet to be set for a grand opening, but Idapro is open for business Monday-Thursday 10 a.m.-7 p.m., and Friday-Saturday 10 a.m.-11 p.m. Prices vary based on each customer's golf needs. Dropping in to take a few swings will run you between $10-$20 for a half-hour, but memberships are offered for $40-$75 per month that offers access, as well as some discounts.
