I tend to recommend movies depending on who my friends are. I have recommended classy movies, but also tasteless, tacky, silly, and even stupid movies. But there are a select few films each year that I can recommend to anyone.

One of them is Silver Linings Playbook, which made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. If my hunch is correct, this may well become the best date movie of the year. It's smart, it's hilarious and it has a great ending. And, oh yes, it's the best film you'll ever see that combines mental illness, professional football and ballroom dancing. That's all I'm going to say about that. But trust me, they intersect.

Adapted from Matthew Quick's bestselling 2008 novel, Silver Linings Playbook is the story of Pat (Bradley Cooper), a severe bipolar young adult. Fresh from a dissolved marriage and an eight-month stay at a mental institution, Pat comes home to live with his folks (Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver, who are both wonderful). Pat meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence, lovely as always), also a damaged soul. The only real thing Pat and Tiffany have in common is their respective pharmaceutical histories. But they both yearn for a connection, healthy or otherwise. What ensues is a glorious mess, directed by David O. Russell (The Fighter). The supporting cast includes Julia Stiles and a hilarious cameo from Chris Tucker.

Don't miss this one.
