Let’s just get this out of the way. Minneapolis folkers Dark Dark Dark, which will be playing at Visual Arts Collective on Sunday, Oct. 28, had its song "Daydreaming" used in an episode of American Idol.

Luckily, it was just used as background music instead of being loaded into the contestants mouths like cannonballs to be fired at the band’s hopes for artistic relevancy.

That song has also made appearances on dignified and mature TV shows like Degrassi: The Next Generation, Grey’s Anatomy and Switched at Birth.

But music is actually far greater than the sum of its licesnsing agreements.

The songs are piano-heavy pop tunes somewhere between Ben Folds Five and The Dresden Dolls with jazzy hints of Yann Tiersen’s work on the Amelie soundtrack. The rich voice of piano player Nona Marie Invie swoons above the jazzy arrangements like an Annie-hitting smooth criminal. The sound is topped off with strings, horns and woodwinds, turning it into a full on folkchestra.

Dark Dark Dark will play at Visual Arts Collective on Sunday, Oct. 28, with Emily Wells and Boise's Storie Grubb and the Holy Wars. The show starts at 8 p.m. and costs $8 advance or $10 at the door.
