TV Commercials Must Pump Down the Volume

Posted By on Wed, Dec 12, 2012 at 3:31 PM

With hopes of making television commercials a bit less annoying, new Federal Communications Commission rules taking effect at midnight will require TV networks to pump down the volume and play all commercials at the same volume as programs.

The Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation Act (better known as CALM) was passed by Congress in 2010 and the FCC adopted the rules in December 2011, but the rules finally go into effect tonight.

Network providers were given the better part of a year to update their equipment, but now it's time to pipe down or pay up. The FCC will require TV stations and cable providers to be responsible for monitoring the loudness of ads, but the commission will enforce the new rules if viewers complain. Consumers are invited to report violations to 1-888-225-5322.
