At Boise Bicycle Project, organizers have busily turned wrenches and screwdrivers to prep hundreds of recycled bicycles to hand out Saturday, Dec. 22, during the sixth annual Christmas Kids Bike Giveaway.

At BBP's 1027 Lusk St. location, the organization connects refurbished bikes with the children of families who can't afford to buy a new one for the holidays. According to Executive Director Jimmy Hallyburton, this year's giveaway is expected to top the 307 bikes distributed in 2011.

"We'll have over 400 bicycles fixed and ready to go," said Hallyburton.

Before the big day, the team is working to pull together as many volunteers as possible to help dole out bicycles. This evening, BBP's weekly volunteer night is devoted to orienting those interested in volunteering for duties like seat adjustments and fittings, and those which don't require technical skill.

"Every single one of them will be put to use," said Hallyburton. "There's so many things, whether it's helping the kids walk through the different stations, fitting helmets or running down the street to Jim's Appliance and Furniture where the bikes are stored."

Wheel over to BBP if you're interested in helping out. Volunteer night kicks off at 6 p.m. and lasts until 8 p.m.
