Need Something To Do Saturday?

The father in the classic comic strip Calvin and Hobbes is famous for taking a hard line on his and his family's suffering.

"It builds character," he'd say, even when he'd lost his glasses at the bottom of a lake and been half-eaten by mosquitoes during a summer vacation.

His suffering is played out every fall and winter, when duck hunters hide behind blinds amid downpours waiting for the right moment to take their shot, or when children freeze their little fingers off going skiing—and love every minute of it.

The Nampa Christmas Bird Count is one such activity. Sure, you're in Canyon County sitting around while the wind and wilds swarm around you. But you're on the lookout for birds during migration season, and are all but guaranteed to see some amazing plumage as you count individual birds and categorize species as they pass through your area of observation.

Be at the Deer Flat Wildlife Refuge visitor's center at 8 a.m. to get your assignments and regroup at 5:30 p.m. over chili and soup while tallying up your results and sharing stories.

For more info, call 208-467-9278 or visit the Deerflat website.
