Need Something To Do Thursday?

In 2010, 35.7 percent of Americans were obese, and 79 million Americans were pre-diabetic. Obesity, consumption of sugary, fatty and pre-prepared foods, and physical inactivity have reached all-time highs, and the problem is only getting worse.

The most distressing thing about obesity in America is the myth that it's difficult to reverse. The billions of dollars poured into the medical system could be a dim memory if Americans spent more time getting regular exercise, watching less television and preparing meals at home.

Playing tonight at the Saint Alphonsus McCleary Auditorium, located at 1055 N. Curtis Road, is Weight of the Nation, an HBO special about the obesity epidemic, its causes and what can be done to combat it. The film is being presented by Activate Treasure Valley, a fitness program put on by the Treasure Valley YMCA.

You can check out the film for FREE from 6-8 p.m. It's followed by a roundtable discussion on the problem of obesity and how the fight against it is being waged in the Treasure Valley. For more info, email Amanda Watson at
