In today's issue of Boise Weekly, we caught up with local band Innocent Man, a sextet set to release its first album, Home Grown, at the Visual Arts Collective Saturday, Feb. 9.

What we didn't tell you is that, while music and beer often go hand in hand, this band has an even closer relationship with suds—in the form of the Innocent Man Belgian IPA. According to guitarist and singer Scott Sprague, the beer is a hops-infused, gold-colored ale created as a collaboration between Washington, D.C.’s DC Brau Brewing Company and Salt Lake City's Epic Brewing Company.

“We know the guys at Epic pretty well because we distribute for them,” said Sprague, who spends his days working at Idaho Wine Merchant in Garden City.

Asked what the beer and band have in common, Sprague said “epic” definitely defines both.

“In more ways that one,” he said. “I’ve met the brewer, Kevin Crompton from Epic, and he’s a perfectionist. We’re pretty much perfectionists, too, and that resonates with me a little bit.”

When asked if the band tastes anything like a Belgian IPA, Sprague had an answer for that, too.

“I guess, in a way, you could say that, because it’s two different genres kinda being stuck together. In a way, that creates something unique and different,” he said. “I guess that’s what we strive for in the band.”

Twelve kegs of Innocent Man Belgian IPA were delivered to Boise last week and are available at Bittercreek Ale House, Bier:Thirty, Brewforia Beer Markets, Bar Gernika, The Front Door and Whole Foods.
