SXSW: Treefort Band Deep Sea Diver Says it has Nothing to do with 'The Deep Sea Diver'

When soul-influenced indie rockers Deep Sea Diver said they always wanted to play at the Old Presbyterian Church in Austin, Texas, because of the sound of the high ceilings, it was easy to see why. The reverbs bouncing off the ceilings matched singer-guitar player-keyboardist Jessica Dobson's voice well and gave the thundering drum work of Peter Mansen extra snap.

The mainstage of Treefort, where Deep Sea Diver will play on Friday, March 22, doesnt have the ceilings, but the band ought to sound pretty good there regardless.

BW caught up with Dobson at SXSW to answer some questions.

BW: Have you ever been to Idaho before? What do you expect?

Dobson: We played in Nampa. I think it was a house show.

BW: What do you expect from Treefort?

Dobson: So far what I know of it, good things. A lot of bands I love are playing. They're putting us up in a hotel. Which is genius 'cause those are rare for us.

BW: We asked people to describe what sort of dance the "deep sea diver" would be and many said it would be "pornographic." How do you feel about that?

Dobson: There was a trend on Twitter using the phrase "deep sea diver" that was pornographic. Thankfully, it has nothing to do us.

BW: What should the dance be like?

Dobson: Peter is the expert on dancing in our band. When it comes to actually dancing though, it looks like a snake getting stepped on.

BW: Why should folks at Treefort come see your show?

Dobson: I think someone should come see us play because we give out free quinuoa.

BW: Do you really?

Dobson: No.
