Spring broke into Boise March 22—albeit for about 30 minutes. Following a miserable 12 hours of sub-freezing temperatures and ice-covered roads, the sun made a cameo appearance to toy with our emotions. All the more reason, to make a road trip to Florida, via the first film to kick off Treefort’s inaugural Film Series: The Taxpayers Go to Florida.

The movie, crafted by Boise-native Clarke Howell, is a loosely-stitched travelogue of an even looser Portland, Ore. band, The Taxpayers, and its 10-day DIY tour with its Atlanta-based kindred spirits, The Wild.

The Taxpayers Go to Florida was one of five films splashed up on the big screen of Boise's Egyptian Theatre, which will host six more films on Sunday, March 24.

Night-after-night, gig-after-gig, the band earns just enough money to get gas into the tank of the van. In between, The Taxpayers hit the beach, revisit a Sarasota storage container where they once lived ($50/month) and a brief, but hilarious, encounter with a snarky Chevron station attendant. The music is good, the musicians are smart and funny and Howell has a really good filmmaking career ahead of him.

On March 22, the Treefort Film Series also showcased the hottest music doc in the nation currently: Sound City. Produced and directed by Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures), this amazing film visits a dilapidated Los Angeles warehouse, which once played host to Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Slipknot and Grohl’s Nirvana.

Sound City, which includes tons of archival footage, lets the music serve as its own narrator. It’s 100 minutes of a geek’s dream. Grohl can give up his night job. He’s that good a director.

And here's some good news: Sound City will have an encore performance Sunday, March 24 at 4:45 p.m. at the Egyptian, as part of another full slate of films.
