Treefort Sunday Re-Cap: AU and Shy Girls Kick Some Brass

AU perform on the Treefort Main Stage.

I’m not sure how I’ve missed the Portland, Ore., experimental pop band AU on their many stops though Boise, but the group’s energetic set at the Treefort Main Stage March 24 floored me.

Keyboardist Luke Wyland said the group hadn’t played together since October and received a last-minute call to fill a hole in the Main Stage lineup left by Animal Collective. Thankfully, the band wasn’t the least bit rusty.

Wyland and drummer Dana Valatka had a kinetic energy, grinning, thrashing and screeching through the band’s set, as Holland Andrews belted out songs flanked by a rocking horn section. It was impossible not to smile at how much fun the group was having.

Another Portland, Ore., band with a prominent horn section also blew me away: Shy Girls. Fronted by Dan Vidmar, a Portland version of Justin Timberlake in an oversized fuzzy sweater, the group made slow and sexy R&B jams complete with organ and wailing alto sax solos.

“I don't wanna make money / I just wanna be someone's honey,” Vidmar crooned from the Neurolux stage.
