Costumed Crowds Swarm China Blue and The Ice Bouquet for Sensory Illumination

The crazy, costumed crowd gave off a welcoming vibe at China Blue and the Ice Bouquet April 13 during the seventh annual Sensory Illumination party, which raged until 5 a.m.

“We had an overwhelming turn out,” said Greg Briggs, Sensory Illumination founder and organizer. “Easily over 1,000.”

Sensory Illumination’s move to China Blue put the event in the thick of Sixth and Main madness, with lines that wrapped around the building past Dirty Little Roddy’s. Casually dressed attendees unknowingly walked off the street to find a bright, fur- and sequin-covered crowd.

Hula-hoop sized jellyfish hung from the ceiling and event organizers danced around throughout the night with a life-sized dinosaur. Fire effects and fire spinners warmed up the back parking lot, where the Night Bus and Altitude Lounge van were transformed into EDM-filled dance parties.

Visuals ranged from video game footage to a documentary-style video projected on the Altitude Lounge van. Tribal drums echoed in the black lot, where artists created live artwork. Sector Seventeen artists Colin Pfeifer and Solomon "Hawk" Sahlein created a giant graffiti mural of their faces. Briggs also brought The Playapus, a 30-foot-long Burning Man car serpent, for attendees to enjoy.

Brave revelers were encouraged to participate in the Groping Box, where they could either sit in the box or put their hands through fuzzy, multicolored sleeves. Aerialists hung from the ceiling inside China Blue, impressing the crowd with artistic, acrobatic performances.

A less artistic afterparty in the Ice Bouquet space hypnotized crowds until 5 a.m. with energetic, diverse sets that varied from the EDM hit “Clarity” by Zedd to the classic “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey. Still bright and furry, the crowd was rewarded with Rockstar giveaways like a longboard and backpack.

“We want to inspire people,” said Briggs, “Sensory Illumination will inspire and spark your creativity.”
