While youngsters snap up books by author Dav Pilkey, his popular children's series Captain Underpants—featuring villains like Tippy Tinkletrousers and Professor Poopypants—causes some parents to chafe.

More Americans asked for Captain Underpants titles to be removed from library shelves than any other title in 2012, according to the American Library Association, garnering more complaints than the previous No. 1 book, Fifty Shades of Grey.

"The Captain Underpants series of 10 books has appeared on the annual list three times since 2002, but has never previously reached the No.1 spot," according to Reuters.

The news came earlier this week, ahead of Pilkey's Thursday, April 18 visit to the Boise Public Library. Prior to the ALA's announcement, Boise Weekly caught up with Pilkey and asked about parents' perceptions of his work. Pilkey said that often parents have a different view of the books after reading one themselves.

"There are some parents who read ‘em and still don’t like ‘em. Sometimes, no matter what you do, people won’t understand or won’t like it," said Pilkey. "But lots of parents say that once they read it themselves they understood not only why their kids like it, but what I was trying to do."

Pilkey expands on that topic in Wednesday's Arts Feature, "Captain Underpants Author Flies into Boise."
