  • Blue is the Warmest Color is too racy for Boise theaters. Too bad it's one of the best films of the year.

People are talking.

When Boise Weekly first broke the story on Oct. 9 regarding Blue is the Warmest Color and how it was being shut out of Idaho movie houses due to its adult nature, our readers began weighing in on the debate surrounding Idaho Code 23-614 which prohibits exhibition of "acts or simulated acts of sexual intercourse, masturbation, sodomy, bestiality, oral copulation and flagellation," and "any person being touched, caressed or fondled on the breast, buttocks, anus or genitals," particularly at an establishment that serves alcohol. And since The Flicks—everyone's favorite showcase for critically acclaimed films—has a beer and wine license, the chance of seeing Blue Is the Warmest Color on the big screen is zero.

BW attended the North American premiere of Blue and found the film to be remarkable, a real must-see.

And now the rest of the globe is weighing in, as well.

First, Variety picked up our story Oct. 10, with the headline "Blue is the Warmest Color Can't Play Idaho Theater Due to Obscenity."

That was followed by The Hollywood Reporter, with the headline "Racy Palme d'Or Winner Blue is the Warmest Color Won't Show in Idaho Theaters."

And now, the United Kingdom's The Guardian has picked up the story. Its headline: "Blue is the Warmest Colour banned in Idaho as Sex and Alcohol Don't Mix."
