BW's Oscar Scorecard: Not Too Shabby

Posted By on Mon, Mar 3, 2014 at 9:15 AM

Boise Weekly had a pretty good night at the Oscars. We pretty-near nailed the winners with our predictions (BW, Screen, "How to Win the Oscar Pool," Feb. 19, 2014).

BW readers have known about this year's Best Picture winner since last fall, when we called 12 Years a Slave "the best film of 2013." (Sept. 11, 2013).

Sunday night's big winner, pulling down seven Oscars, was Gravity, which BW predicted that you could "bet your house on the fact that it will grab every technical Oscar available.” (Sept. 9, 2013).

We also checked some of our other prior critiques of Oscar night's champions. In each case, we correctly predicted Oscar gold:

Best Actor: Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club— “...his best performance to date.” Nov. 20, 2013

Best Actress: Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine— “...tragically superb in Oscar-bound performance.” Aug. 14, 2013

Best Adapted Screenplay: 12 Years a Slave— " American classic." Sept. 11, 2013

Best Original Screenplay: Her— "Here's hoping that this Oscar-bound film inspires more human interaction." Jan. 8, 2014

Best Documentary: 20 Feet From Stardom— “I can’t recommend it enough.” July 24, 2013

Best Foreign Language Film: The Great Beauty— "It’s magnificent. Almost like a dream.” Feb. 5, 2014

Best Animated Feature, Best Original Song: Frozen— “Frozen soars to the heights of the finest Disney traditions.” Dec. 18, 2013

Best Animated Short Subject: Mr. Hublot— “ favorite film in the animated group.” Jan. 29, 2014

Best Live Action Short Subject:: Helium— "I suspect the Oscar winner is Denmark’s Helium.“ Jan. 29, 2014

Additionally, we correctly predicted best director, supporting actor and supporting actress Oscars, so all-in, not a bad track record.

Who will win next year's Oscars? Stick with us and we'll let you know ... well ahead of time.
