Halfway through his set at The Reef on March 26, Jason Webley asked the crowd for requests. When the crowd shouted out several different song titles, the Everett, Wash.-based musician promised he'd play some of them.

"Thanks for reminding me about a lot of things that I wrote," Webley said.

The audience showed its appreciation right back: People whooped, stomped to the beat and sang along to Webley's songs, which mix folk, cabaret and other genres with playful, sardonic, compassionate lyrics that cover a variety of topics, including death, masturbation, a forgotten heiress and the desire to buy a giraffe.

Before the end of his set, Webley stepped away from the mic to tell the audience how he looked into the requirements of owning a giraffe in Washington. He paused at one point and wondered aloud if the people talking in the back could hear him.

"We'll tell them later," a man in the crowd shouted.
