Google Mounts Rainbow Logo in Response to Russia's Gay Propaganda Law

Posted By on Fri, Feb 7, 2014 at 12:20 PM

One of the world's most influential tech companies and popular search engines has raised its flag in opposition to Russia's anti-gay propaganda law.

The law, passed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Duma in June 2013, criminalizes gay "propaganda," and the law has been interpreted to criminalize distribution of LGBT rights materials and holding demonstrations advocating for LGBT issues. This morning, Google fired back with one of its logos tweaked to look like the iconic rainbow flag representing the LGBT community.

Clicking on the logo directs Web surfers to this page, where each color of the flag represents an Olympic sport—downhill skiing, hockey, curling, luging, figure skating and snowboarding—and a section from the Olympic charter that reads:

"The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play."

Six Olympians are openly gay.

Attention Students: It's Time to Doodle for Google

Posted By on Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 4:01 PM

How do you brighten up a mundane Internet search? It happens every time the folks at Google decide to change up the graphics on the search engine's homepage—creating all sorts of fun things with its name.

But once a year, Google gives students in kindergarten through 12th grade a swing at creating something that will be seen by millions. And while the exposure is awesome (the winner is displayed on the U.S. homepage for one day in May), and the college scholarship even better ($50,000, thank you very much), you're going to have to be quick on your toes if you want to compete. The deadline for getting your entries in for this year's competition is Friday, March 23.

The theme is, "If I could travel in time, I'd visit ..."

Maybe the answer to that is back a few weeks so your kids would have more time to come up with an incredible entry. Get all the details on the contest here.

Google Hits, aka, Google Takes A Hit Out On Users

Posted By on Tue, Feb 23, 2010 at 11:32 AM

From a sister alt-weekly in Madison, WI came a link to this hilarious video.

Unless, of course, Google is reading this. In that case, this is a terrible video that purports libelous claims against the most benevolent company in the world. Ever.
