This house was built in the same year that the Beatles first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. Although there's no way to tell whether John, Paul, George or Ringo ever slept here, the home's architecture combines modern aesthetics from both past and present in a way that seems as cool as the Fab Four, while appearing as private and welcoming as a laid-back after-party at George's house.

The home's old siding was recently removed and replaced with tan stucco, and an upper floor addition with a master suite and private library has been added to create a three-story dwelling. A new two-car garage with an upstairs bonus room was also added during remodeling. The former ranch-style exterior now bears a contemporary, linear look surrounded by professional landscaping and tall pine trees on a wooded hillside lot.

Cues for most of the interior color scheme seem to have been taken from the rich spectrum of grays and medium browns found in the Oakley stone flooring in the entry hallway. Pops of color like mint green and lavender hide inside a few of the five bedrooms and keep the overall palette from becoming too monotonous.

The three-story floor plan places the master suite and the library on the top floor; the main living spaces, one bedroom and an office on the main level; and a family room, three bedrooms, a den and the laundry room on the bottom floor. There are splendid views of Crane Creek Golf Course, the Foothills and Bogus Basin from every north-facing room—which is to say most of the rooms in the house. If you have a need for an abundance of built-in storage cabinets, closets, nooks and shelves, there are more here than you can shake a stick at.

A small water feature burbles in the front courtyard where a wide, arbor-covered patio provides space for outdoor furniture. A pair of persimmon-colored front doors open to a tall foyer that reaches back to the new addition above. The Oakley stone in the entry hall and one wall covered with grass cloth harken to the mid-60s.

An elevated deck wraps around two sides of the main level—from the living room to the kitchen and across to the original master suite. From the entrance, the living room sits to the right, where you'll find deck access and a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace nestled in the corner. You'll pass through the formal dining room and around a corner before entering the kitchen. What look like the original cabinets have been stained dark brown, and they quietly complement modern amenities like an immense side-by-side stainless refrigerator, sleek black Zodiaq quartz countertops and a work island with a gas cook top and a curved stainless steel hood vent overhead.

The new master suite features plush gray carpeting, marvelous views of the Foothills, and a private balcony with enough space for a bistro set. The master bathroom boasts tumbled travertine tile on the floor surrounding the jetted bathtub and in the shower (complete with his-and-hers shower heads). The dual vanity has oval stainless steel sinks and a large oval mirror above. The master bedroom features a dual-sided fireplace, which is shared with the library on the other side. In the library you'll find floor-to-ceiling alder bookcases and more fantastic views of the Foothills.

Pros: Too many features to list. Spacious, remodeled Highlands home blends original character with modern aesthetics and amenities. Elevated deck and shaded back yard require summer barbecues and "A Hard Day's Night" on the boom box.

Cons: Two-car garage may not be enough for some, but the driveway is plenty long.

Open House: Saturday, Aug. 9, 2-4 p.m.
