    Anything but a diva
To me just every opera character is a real person. And I think that's the way to be able to connect with audiences and to keep opera alive. I think opera is for everybody.

National Smokejumpers Association reunion brings up old memories

Bob Sallee doesn't much like remembering that hot, chaotic, tragic August day in 1949, but he realizes he's the only one who can. At 75, Sallee is the last remaining survivor of the Mann Gulch fire in Montana, a conflagration that consumed the lives of 15 smokejumpers and a fire guard, a controversial event memorialized in Norman Maclean's 1992 book Young Men and Fire.

"I don't like to (talk about it)," says Sallee. "But everyone says I'm part of history. So I guess I am. I guess this is kind of my job."

Idaho outdoor companies mingle with Kempthorne, men in skirts
The man was slightly out of breath as he tapped me on the shoulder. "Do you mind if I ask you a question?" he said. "How many times have you washed your shoes?" I looked down at my admittedly rather ratty pair of Keen sandals. "Never," I said. "You mean, why are they so faded? I have no idea.""Neither do I," he said. "But I don't like it. They're not supposed to do that." My questioner, it turns out, was one of the actual designers of the sandal. It was a conversation one could only have at the Outdoor Retailer Market in Salt Lake City, Utah.
