Re: “Amtrak's Empire Builder (Which Runs Through Idaho's Panhandle) Is Anything But

Meanwhile, Amtrak progressively expands up the coast of Maine (it used to end in Boston, was intelligently extended to Portland where it goes intermodal with buses and the airport, now has advanced up the coast to Belfast). Amtrak adds seasonal service to Cape Cod and competes favorably with gridlock-choked roads in the summertime. The State of New Mexico and private business offer "Railrunner" service between Albuquerque and Santa Fe, for both tourists and state government employees who work in the state capital but can't afford to live there and now commute by rail.

It's long been a Republican ploy to use Amtrak as a political whipping boy, all the while ignoring the vast Federal subsidies that support the Interstate highway system and municipal airports across the country. We've done a great job in this country turning our back on a once-great passenger rail system.

In Boise, we still have a depot and the rails and easements west to Portland and Seattle, yet no one has yet put together a plan to diversify our state's transportation system. A real lack of political will and foresight. I guess we just prefer traffic-choked I-84 and lonely, 10-hour drives to the coast. Pity.

Re: “Amtrak's Empire Builder (Which Runs Through Idaho's Panhandle) Is Anything But

You don’t have to seek further than the USA’s sub-soviet-quality passenger railroad system to see that the US is striving to become the Bulgaria of the western hemisphere.

The Hudson River Amtrak train between Albany and New York may have the highest ridership in the country, but it’s still a Third World experience.

Even if Americans seem to prefer for the present moment to drive or fly, it may not always be the case that they will be able to.

Several surprising forces are gathering to take down the Happy Motoring matrix.

Peak oil is actually not playing out in the form of too-high gasoline prices, but rather a race between a bankrupt middle class unable to pay the total costs of motoring and an oil industry that can’t make a profit drilling for hard-to-get oil. That scenario is plain to see in the rapid rise and now fall of shale oil.

America is going to need trains more than it thinks right now, despite what the “free market” says.

The condition of our trains is symptomatic of the shape of the nation.

Mired in debt with disintegrating infrastructure.

Apparently we’d rather just turn into the walking dead.

Re: “First Memorial Day Without Ground War in 14 Years

Memorial Day commemorates soldiers killed in war.

We are told that the war dead died for us and our freedom. US Marine General Smedley Butler challenged this view. He said that our soldiers died for the profits of the bankers, Wall Street, Standard Oil, and the United Fruit Company.

Here is an excerpt from a speech that he gave in 1933:

“War is just a racket. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of people. Only a small inside group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few at the expense of the masses."

"The trouble with America is that when the dollar only earns 6 percent over here, then it gets restless and goes overseas to get 100 percent. Then the flag follows the dollar and the soldiers follow the flag."

"Most American soldiers died fighting foes who posed no threat to the United States. Our soldiers died for secret agendas of which they knew nothing. Capitalists hid their self-interests behind the flag, and our boys died for the One Percent’s bottom line.”

And so it still goes……...

Re: “Boston Bomber Tsarnaev Sentenced to Death

The statement made by Obama appointed Carmen Ortiz that Tsarnaev was NOT acting on behalf of Islam is outrageous and more P.C. Obama-speak that has permeated his administration and the lap-dog U.S. media at large. Tsarnaev stated he WAS acting on behalf and representing of Islam. Did The Clinton administration say that Timothy Mcveigh WAS NOT acting on behalf of and representing Christians when was found guilty for the Oklahoma City bombings? Every time violence happens at the hands of Muslim's our government (Obama administration) rushes in to say it doesn't represent Islam. Pathetic and moreover, dangerous for the American people.

Re: “Boston Bomber Tsarnaev Sentenced to Death

Can you say patsy?

There are so many holes in the ‘official’ story that it’s clear it’s a hoax, just like Sandy Hook.

What’s particularly incredible is that the public watches crisis actors perform in movies all the time, but they can’t spot them in a supposed ‘real’ event.

Take a look at some of the analysis below making it clear that the event was faked using crisis actor amputees, Hollywood blood, smoke bombs, etc:…………

Dig and you'll find much more.

So who could have benefited by staging this phony crisis?

Re: “Video: A Battery...For Your House?

Watcher... Nicely written but flawed... Remember when the limitations of the Internet (reaching full usage) were proclaimed.... Solar and Battery's futures are unlimited in actuality, writers on the subject are the only limitations to our future.

Re: “Video: A Battery...For Your House?

Dream on…….

This is only going to “fundamentally change the way” a tiny minority of “the world population uses energy”, if they live in a Sunbelt area, but it might be enough of the .0001 percent, at the top of the economic siphon hose, that Muskie can make a few bucks off of.

In a recent report, BofA said Tesla investors should not get too excited about Tesla’s stationary storage applications venture.

“In our view, a potential market for residential stationary storage is even further down the road than Tesla’s 2020 target for profitability,” the bank said in its report.

BofA analysts note that payback periods for Tesla’s customers for any residential energy storage product will likely keep it out of reach for the masses. Without factoring in government subsidies, the bank notes those payback periods could stretch to about eight years, assuming full cash purchase of the product and system ownership by the customer.

BofA further notes that Tesla’s goal of relieving people of the reliance on the national grid, possibly through an independent application that combines solar power and battery storage, that the bank speculates Tesla is working on, would cost a hefty $38,600 for a 10kW system.

There's plenty of evidence that ecigs are not healthy. They may be not as harmful as normal cigarettes, but why would we allow children access to either?

@Nate, I think e-cigs and vaping are too new to have 'demonstrable effects' proven. Time will tell. I say, forego regulation and let Darwin have at them.

Re: “Foreign Policy Debate Erupts Within GOP

@ Truthy Speaker...tell us, out of fifty, who is most likely to be nominated? You named them at the beginning of your rant.
But, otherwise, you are correct. The media...CONtrolled by BILLIONAIRES, both CON and DEM, are not giving these other candidates exposure because they are less likely to be mouthpieces for these same BILLIONAIRES. The problem in this country isn't the political parties, it is the ELITE RICH.

This headline should be changed to what it really means: CONservatives say "World War III is NECESSARY!"

Re: “Foreign Policy Debate Erupts Within GOP

Media lies! Why the misinformation? Paul, Cruz, and Rubio are NOT the only Republican candidates who have formally declared they will run. There are already OVER 50 declared Republican candidates in a field of nearly 300 candidates total. The truth is in black and white on the official FEC (Federal Election Commission) site. The media controls your awareness of the truth, but only if YOU allow it. Go to the source and get the truth, not the rich-get-richer story the media wants you to believe:

Re: “E-Cig Use Among Youth Prompts New Calls to Speed Regulation

As a parent, I'm absolutely horrified that youth smoking has plummeted to the lowest levels ever recorded, and that more and more young people (many of whom would otherwise have wound up as lifelong smokers) are foregoing cigarettes in favor of an alternative that poses no demonstrable risk to their health whatsoever.

We simply must put a stop to this!

Re: “UPDATE: Clinton Tries Again to Crack the 'Highest Glass Ceiling'

Remember back in the day when election campaigns focused on the ideals of the candidate, and what THEY could do that was positive for America? Now, it is just months and months of feces flinging and spewing bile at the other side, trying to drag down your opponent far enough to make you look like the better choice. It's like a bunch of three year olds fighting over binkie.

Re: “UPDATE: Clinton Tries Again to Crack the 'Highest Glass Ceiling'

I wish her luck. The flaming has started early and it is going to be fierce the whole time. Eighteen damn months of this crap. I am not going to be able to stand this.
England has the right idea, election campaigning is limited to something like four weeks.
