Re: “Walking Papers, Walking Papers

I need to know the chords to use in my guitar lessons and to put together a song by Paula Abdul that my wife loves dearly ...I think the name is " Straight up"....Any way I could get the moves on the strings to practice this ???

Re: “Beltane, Self-Titled

I don't understand how comments on a simple review turn into a thread almost entirely devoted to Josh's penis. But here's what I think: If (Josh's penis) "...resembles a puppy tucked into a blanket" then that puppy is a Great
Dane and the blanket is a California king size down comforter.

Re: “Beltane, Self-Titled

I cant speak for the rest of Beltane but I luv Josh's penis for popping our bad review cherry! i didnt know there was a cherry to be found among us! We have had more song plays, "likes" and cd down loads since this review was published than in any previous 24 hour period and the Beltane review is now the most commented on review Josh has ever done! this is the best promo we have had since we were put on the family forum watch list for being devil worshippers!

Re: “Beltane, Self-Titled

Whoa whoa whoa, I think we need to reevaluate where this thread has gone. Josh's penis is a beautiful piece of sculpture. It resembles a puppy tucked into a blanket, and for the record, it's anything but small. For shame, Beltane, for getting your penis-bashing minions spread such filth. Good day.

Re: “Beltane, Self-Titled

As least he didn't slam the entire genre for what it is: pandering to the boring Anglo-hippie "back-to-Gaia" crowd.

Re: “Beltane, Self-Titled

I gave the music a listen. To the casual listener, the music does sound dull and cliche. It's made for a very specific audience. I think his review is pretty nice. To my ears, this stuff is terrible. This style of music is why I play video games with the music turned off.

Re: “Beltane, Self-Titled

Apparently some of you don't know what a music critic does so I got the definition for you from…

Noun critic - a critic of musical performances
critic - a person who is professionally engaged in the analysis and interpretation of works of art

This is Josh's interpretation of this band's work, nothing more, nothing less. You like them? Fine. Don't like the review? Also fine. Name calling, belittling, and asking for someone's job because you disagree with a person's OPINION? I wonder who the assholes here really are.

And for the record, Jeanine Lesniak, Josh has a massive penis. I've seen it.

Re: “Beltane, Self-Titled

Well Josh, thanks for taking the time to review our CD! It's clear that you didn't like it, but that's not a problem for me. When an artist turns in their art to be reviewed by someone who is paid to criticize, they know that they may not like what the critic has to say. But I'm not here to criticize your comments, as they speak very loudly for themselves.

There is one thing I would like to ask you on behalf of Beltane, and anyone else who happens your way. PLEASE have the professional integrity to do your research before you speak! You say that Beltane describes itself as a Celtic band and by that, you are insinuating that we are basically misrepresenting ourselves. Our fans describe us as Celtic, but we know we're not the Chieftains! If you had taken time to actually read our website (that you linked to) you would have understood where the "Spanish and Latin music, making heavy use of minor keys, acoustic guitar and flute flourishes" comes from. I'm going to quote, in our own words from that website, what we are about...

"Our music is a rich mix of original songs based on Celtic and World myths and traditions.

Though our foundations may be traditional, our sound is quite “modern”. One can hear the influence of everything from Celtic violin, to Middle Eastern rhythms, to Native
American flutes, and classic American rock guitar.

Ultimately, Beltane’s sound is about the human voice, and its ability to create beauty, and to share messages, feelings and stories. The lush female harmonies, and the beauty and integrity of the lyrics are central to our sound".

Just thought you might like to know, Josh.

Re: “Beltane, Self-Titled

First listened to Beltane from New York, where good music was born and critics are overrated. Beltane is good -- their harmonies are excellent, their lyrics are focused, their instrumentation necessary.

Being a "critic" means examining, listening, reading -- it doesn't mean pulling the rug out from people who do what critics can't.

When I was in college it was such fun to dump on creative people. Using fancy verbiage wrapped in a snarky attitude seemed so cool, so perfectly relevant to being 18. But thankfully we all grow up.

Beltane gives, they entertain, they elevate listeners. They also deserve better. Creative Boise deserves better.

Re: “Beltane, Self-Titled

why would a local paper that claims to support local music, have on its staff a reviewer that obviously hates the local music scene? Over the years
I have noticed that the weekly has tried overly hard to seem like a real city paper, which many times it has failed miserably at. I believe that this ridiculous treatment of fine, caring , talented musicians is an attempt at being "real". I personally know some of the musicians this jerk has trashed and his phony and handicapped approach to criticism has caused much harm and not an ounce of good. As a business owner who has won Best of Boise for 4 or 5 years, and has the Weekly in my store it makes me angry and sad that I now have to have these negative feeling about a paper that I have been proud to associate with for many years. I can only ask the Weekly why.

Re: “Beltane, Self-Titled

This review is a poorly written opinion piece by a Portland transplant who revels in cutting any Boise musician that does not fit into the "hipster Treefort scene". When looking at his FaceBook page it is obvious that his pieces are intended to provoke as he often likes to announce his "whereabouts" so readers can "accost him for anything he writes". "THEJoshGross" is anything but genuine. The Boise Weekly would be well advised to employ a critic who can listen objectively to many genres of music rather than a Northwest Poseur that uses his job to promote his own frat boy band. Could we please have good writing and thoughtful reviews rather than some faux coolster slap and tickle? Arrogant and irresponsible. I won't be reading his reviews in the future.

Re: “Beltane, Self-Titled

Funny- I moved across country from Boise to Madison, WI and have shared Beltane with many along the way. Everyone that I have gifted with their music has loved it. Every festival from Goddess Fest to Hyde Park that I attended where Beltane has performed (not to mention their other engagements at Shangri La, etc.) were well attended by diverse crowds and EVERYONE from my toddlers to rockers to grandparents was enjoying themselves. Really BW? A music review written by someone in a band called God Crotch? And I'm supposed to take it seriously?

Re: “Beltane, Self-Titled

This is typical myopic and hasty Boise music critic prose, conveying and disguising personal opinion and emotional reaction as musical fact, clearly two concepts that the reviewer is unable to distinguish in this particular instance. An experienced and discerning music critical knows how to make positive, insightful and interesting comments about a piece of music or group that are based on factual and objective characteristics, while also providing something new and unique for readers to digest. This review, however, devoid of any creativity and finesse, appears to resemble a sophomoric book report or "show 'n tell" depiction that can best be summed up as "I don't like this music, so I'm going to abuse my authoritative position as a critic for BW to dupe my readers into believing that because I think it's so, therefore it is." -- K. Hartung

Re: “Beltane, Self-Titled

So why write something like this about a band who's project took so much love, devotion and effort to bring to life their joy of making music and sharing it with people who dig them.
If you have such a grudge against their position and belief, toss it to someone else rather than
drool such vitreous disdain and derision all over their record. Your article goes well awry of a cd review, and imparts an obvious bias that renders the whole thing irrelevant.

All I can say is...... This guy is WAY off base. He apparently is unfamiliar with music. Beltane rocks. Period.
From now on, know that the opposite of what this guys says is true!

Re: “Beltane, Self-Titled

Just one more thing in case the owners of the paper are reading this . . . THIS kind of negativity is the reason we do not advertise with the Boise Weekly! And I'll bet there are lots of other business owners who feel the same way.

Re: “Beltane, Self-Titled

I wish I was a versatile enough musician that I could sound other than the way that I sound so I would sound less "positively fake" hahahaha but i feel soooo enlightened now on how Folk and Pagan is supposed to sound NOT !!!!
