Re: “Whitewater Women

YES, David Green ~ we've all known someone who has died in whitewater, but looking at it from a safety record ~ it's less than the number of deaths during a year than Air travel, and it happens to be less than the number of Men drowning in their own bath tubs!!!

This is not a GENDER Issue, People!!!

Re: “Whitewater Women

Some will recall the loss of Julie Wilson in 1974 when she was paddling the Bruneau with Walt Blackadar. The events are discussed in a landmark essay entitled "The Wrong Side of the Edge" by Ron Waters, Professor Emeritus of Outdoor Education at ISU and author of "Never Turn Back" about the life of legendary Idaho wildwater pioneer Walt Blackadar.

Re: “Tour de Rad

Quite the adventure, Andrew! I'm glad you're submitting the story from back at base camp, rather than it being a "dispatch from the field" sent in on the satellite phone, while you survive by eating a thawed-out winter-kill deer carcass. (A long and deep snow field will almost turn me back... I guess I'm just a city slicker at heart.)

Re: “Bombs Away! BW Takes a Flight in a B-17

The Liberty Foundation is wonderful to keep her flying. I'm sure it's an expensive experience for many, but it is in fact "once in a lifetime". Also, it costs money to gas her up and keep her pretty. If not for opportunities like these, a piece of history would be lost to us all. These are the things our generation must know and remember.

Re: “Loathsome Dove: Open Season on Eurasian Collared Doves

I like these birds as well. One thing I HAVE noticed is that when they are around, starlings are NOT! and I HATE starlings. Given the fact that they seem to be less destructive and are good to eat. I will welcome the dove on my property. Perhaps fish and game should do a study on that... JMO

Re: “Loathsome Dove: Open Season on Eurasian Collared Doves

We're a few miles from Jump Creek and a couple of years these guys took residence in our yard. I love birds but their incessant cooing is driving me over the edge. If I have anything to do with it they will end up on our table.

Re: “Loathsome Dove: Open Season on Eurasian Collared Doves

A few years ago, I protected a breeding pair from the crows, and now I have a pair in every big tree on the property. I like them as well, they're fun to always have around. It's like having pet birds without cages.

Re: “Hikers Do Expensive Damage To Muddy Trails

It's the same issue with motorized and non-motorized users alike. ATVs tear up the place when the ground is wet, but often do minimal damage when the ground is dry (I'm from the Lake Superior area, so I'm not talking about Boise). 4WD vehicles do the same to many roads. And, hikers and mountain bikers are widening trails in areas where the soil is clayey, creating mudholes, parallel routes, and resource damage.

The solution is not to keep people off of trails. The solutions involve rerouting trails to stabler locations, trail surface hardening, and closing trails when the ground is wet. Simply suggesting that folks stay off of trails when the ground is wet is not likely a good solution.

So your verdict is to ban all folks from trails?

Re: “Paradise is 45 Minutes from Boise

Hi Jessica.

One simply cannot go wrong with:

1. Hot Water
2. Port
3. Antler Chandeliers

And if you can experience all three at once - life is sublimely complete.

Re: “Hell Hasn't Iced Over Yet

While it's true that many drysuits cost $1000 (or more), they are readily available for $600 or so. My new company, Mythic Gear ( has broken the price-point by offering drysuits starting at $225, making cold-water kayaking affordable for the first time to many who could not previously afford a drysuit.
