Re: “What Constitutes a 'Clean, Sober and Safe' House in Idaho?

This message is for copious disrespect.
Read his comment above before reading this.

The SHIP housing program I stayed at was a great experience.

Your excessive noise and late night activity comment. At our house a strict 9 pm cerfew is enforced.

Your comment about delapitated cars. Most of them are so down and out they don't own cars. They rely heavily on the bus system.

Your comment about drinking and drugging all the time. At our SHIP house we took sobriety very seriously. We held each other to great standards.

Re: “What Constitutes a 'Clean, Sober and Safe' House in Idaho?

I think this article hit some great points. Not everyone is homeless for the same reason. These environments face so many different situations. Some are transitioning from the criminal system. Some face mental illness. Some are very young and have no support system. Some are very old and have no support system. Whatever the case individuals automatically jump to the conclusion you're a criminal. When your in the system your treated like a criminal. I understand when you are duly convicted of a crime you lose many of your civil liberties.

If I could point at that many of these people are not criminals. I really admire what Brandt is doing. He is serving a niche in a community that needs hope. So many times addiction and recovery play of the vulnerabilities of families. Most of the time these houses offer management with little to no training in recovery. To be a certified drug and alcohol counselor in the state of Idaho does not even require a high school diploma.

Re: “What Constitutes a 'Clean, Sober and Safe' House in Idaho?

I can speak from experience. I was recently transferred from a behavioral health center involving problems with suicide. I have never had any legal problems what so ever. Every step of the way I was treated like a criminal. Part of BPA or the business psychological association "what I found interesting is they are a for profit model"

I was stuffed in these group therapy classes at Ascent and they made a huge deal if I missed any group therapy or Urine Analysis. I realized these were high profit margins for them. I tried to advocate how important individual Therapy was for me. They kept canceling my individual Therapy appointments 44% of my individual Therapy was cancelled. Me trying to advocate for myself ended up with them threatening my housing. They were very successful. I lost my housing and living in my car.

Re: “What Constitutes a 'Clean, Sober and Safe' House in Idaho?

When we declared a "War on Drugs", we quickly became the most incarcerated nation in the world. Who are these people? 67% of them have the diagnosis of Substance Use Disorder. In case you missed it, the Surgeon General recently released a report on how this disease is affecting our country and our communities:

https://addiction.surgeongeneral.gov/

The percentage of individuals in recovery who might need a "safe, clean and sober home" who have not had any criminal justice system involvement is quite small.... (Quite frankly, I find it odd that the operator of this house, who has had criminal justice system involvement himself, has taken such a stance.)

Here's a thought: What if we provided treatment and support? What if we didn't marginalize or discriminate against a person who has faced the demons of addiction and wants to heal and be a productive member of our community?

What if we quit thinking of these individuals as "them" and started realizing that they are US!???

Re: “What Constitutes a 'Clean, Sober and Safe' House in Idaho?

Our governments need to put restrictions on where and how many people with a history of problems can live. These folks are the byproduct of a profiteering CJ system and a failed mental illness system.

What all these boohoo OPED articles fail to take into account is how these halfway houses totally screw up a neighborhood. It only takes one turd in the pool. Excessive noise, excessive dilapidated vehicles, late night activity, petty crime, and completely trashed rental houses. Why should we bother to keep up our home if these scumbag profiteers can drop a bunch of rowdy unsupervised probationers into the house next door without restriction? Even if these people are not drinking or drugging they smoke $200 a week in cigarettes. It creates an inescapable plume of stink engulfing a large area near the rental.

This imposition upon people who don't want our property values destroyed needs to become a campaign issue. There is a place and a need but you are intentionally crapping on the people paying the bills. You dump them in good neighborhoods for the residents to babysit. Disrespect for upstanding people and very bad judgment is at the core of the whole mess.

Re: “Why Doesn't Donald Trump's 'American Greatness' Include Bert and Ernie?

Sesame Street is a multi billion dollar enterprise and does not need corporate welfare from the Federal Government anymore. End of story.

Re: “Why Doesn't Donald Trump's 'American Greatness' Include Bert and Ernie?

Sesame Street sold itself to HBO in August of 2015.

https://thinkprogress.org/sunny-days-are-c…

The "Bert and Ernie" thing is cute, but the whole neighborhood got off welfare a year and a half ago, so "Sesame Street" isn't getting cut.

BW, did you check this at all?

Re: “Donald Trump's Table Manners

So Meals on Wheels funding isn't planned to be cut (" the Trump White House hasn't mentioned any proposed cuts to OAA") and it's unclear what fraction the Feds pay to fund the school lunch program ("It turns out that the federal government only partially pays for school lunches at a CEP school").

Is there any reporting in this story? Could you quantify the cuts on the table, and compare them to the amount funded through non-Federal means?

Re: “Once in a Lifetime

From eclipse2017.org -

Respectfully, professor, you must never have seen a total eclipse! A 90% partial eclipse is by NO MEANS anything CLOSE to seeing the full glory of totality. Boise is NOT a good place to see this eclipse. Please, everyone reading this article - get north into the path. Lots of great info on this is available on the various sites quoted in the comments, including eclipse2017.org.

YOU MUST BE IN THE PATH of totality to see all the wonder of a total eclipse. please do NOT stay in Boise, or you will wonder what all the fuss was about - and you will have missed the show! Get north INTO the path! No joke...

Oh yes, and the filters you need in order to safely view the partial phases of the eclipse cost no more than a dollar or so. Get them now! eclipseglasses.us

Re: “Once in a Lifetime

Also, this year's total solar eclipse will not be the first in Idaho in 99 years. The last one was in February, 1979. The 1918 eclipse was the last one to go across the entire country from Pacific to Atlantic coasts.

Re: “Once in a Lifetime

From the northernmost tip of Craters of the Moon, totality will last 1 min. 14 sec. Traveling a bit further north, to the center line, will increase the time of totality by 80%.

Re: “Climate Strange: Idaho's Tug of War on Climate Change

Carbon Fraud aptly named. The atmosphere is not analogous to an actual "greenhouse." It is a metaphor for what happens in a system that can trap heat, like a greenhouse. The earth's troposphere is 5 - 9 mi thick, not 8ft. The gases' (CO2, O2, N2, H2O, etc) interactions with solar radiation and earth's thermal radiation is much different in an 8ft high than in a 5-9 mi high box. It is also different at extreme concentration differences. Please show us the experimental data you are citing and the extrapolations used to compensate for the different concentrations, geometric differences, surface difference, effects of the glass or other material used for the enclosure, etc. Without this information, you're just being obtuse and blowing hot air. And contrary to Mick's belief, the 2nd Law of Thermo does not apply to a open system like our atmsophere.

Re: “Climate Strange: Idaho's Tug of War on Climate Change

I want to know why Al Gore, patron saint of the environmental movement in the US Congress and later on VEEP, just bought his SECOND mansion on the beaches of Monte Cito, California, where you would expect the rising seas to swallow up his new investment.

Re: “Climate Strange: Idaho's Tug of War on Climate Change

Fact: Anthropogenic CO2 = 0.0015% of the Atmosphere. Myth: 0.0015% of the atmosphere can control the average temperature of the Atmosphere and the Oceans violating the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics. Fact: The Sun Controls the Climate because the Sun Controls both the H20 and Carbon cycles, Dummies, and the PDO controls western wildfire frequency more than any other climate variable. Fact:You've been brainwashed. Fact:Before you unload on me, I never vote Repulsican and I think tRump is part of the Russian Mafia and should be impeached for his criminal activities.

If CO2 isn't the culprit, great, but if CO2 is causing the earth to warm so rapidly, it's probably too late to prevent the predicted catastrophes.

Jon - I am truly mystified as to how you think addressing climate change would line my own pockets. It is the fossil fuel industry that is flooding politicians with campaign donations, and I can assure you they are not donating to my campaign.
