I was hoping that you all could help with some fact checking regarding the maximum tolerated loads for several HWY 12 bridges traversed by the mega-load trucks.
According the national bridge registry (, there are three bridges along HWY 12, including FISH CREEK, PAPOOSE CREEK, and DEADMAN CREEK, all of which have an operational rating of <40 metric tons (or <88,184 pounds).
The national bridge registry defines operation rating as the "absolute maximum permissible load level to which the structure may be subjected".
Therefore, my assumption is that exceeding this load level will dramatically increase the risk of bridge failure.
Each of the bridges mentioned above is between 85-107ft long. The Mega-load is ~226 ft long. Based on examining the pictures of the Mega-load trailer, it would appear all front and rear axles (12 each; 24 total) will be on the bridge spans at the same time. If true, the bridges would bear half of the total weight of the load (or 146 metric tons (assuming the total load is 647,000 lbs)).
This exceeds the maximum operating weight by over 100 metric tons.
While this analysis is simplistic and does not take into account bridge design, weight distributions, etc, it is none-the-less alarming.
Would you all be willing to (1) check the calculations above; and (2) contact IDT, the governors office, and the national bridge registry to determine if these and other HWY 12 bridges have been evaluated for bearing these weights?
I am not against the mega-loads in principle, but I am concerned with safety and the lasting damage to roads and bridges.
