Re: “Teacher Protests Scheduled for Tonight Throughout Idaho

Gracieallan - teaching in a private school - an organization in which parents are highly invested in their children's success, and are putting their money where their mouths are - is an ENTIRELY different enterprise than teaching public school. Your anecdotal information is interesting, but not relevant. When you've been accountable for the outcomes of children whose parents don't get involved in their education, don't support you and in fact attack you frequently, and maybe don't even provide basic care for their own kids such as plenty of food and rest (let alone making them do their homework) - then your opinion will be relevant.

Re: “Teacher Protests Scheduled for Tonight Throughout Idaho

Sorry - merit pay rewards teachers who teach in schools with lots of resources - chief among them - parental involvement. Merit pay is a disincentive for the most talented teachers to go where there are needed most - working with our most at-risk kids.

Re: “First Luna Reform Bill Passes Senate 20-15

Thank you to those Republicans who represented their constituents today. For the rest of them - voting 'yes' when the public response to these bills has been overwhelmingly negative - I will remember this when you're up for re-election. Very sorry elected public officials, indeed.

Re: “Teachers Mourn Senate Passage of Education Bills

When smart, innovative, hard-working people are no longer attracted to the field of education - a historically low-paying profession here in Idaho - then maybe people will see how much harm Luna has done. Loving kids is an important part of the job and we don't enter the field for the money, but it's a somewhat thankless job with criticism coming at you for every move you make - believe me, I know. The working conditions vary wildly from school to school and district to district. When you get chewed out by parents constantly - for everything - sometimes it's things like some reasonable job security and a decent retirement that make the low pay and the hostility bearable.
This is going to harm our kids for a few decades, at least.
