Re: “To Pay or Not to Pay: That is the Question: Local Performers and the Shadow Economy

I am in one of those bands that has been opening for local shows at he shredder and since Cantrell started doing shows in his garage and although i would love to get paid we have made a huge network all over the country, so we could tour if we wanted to, from playing for free and making these connections. The reality of the music business is that there are different forms of musicians, there are entertainers and there are bands who do all originals making that band there own "business". entertainers play mostly covers and are paid to entertain from bars, weddings, and cruise ships etc. they always get paid because they are hired to entertain. But bands like my own and many other local bands dont get paid much to play locally because they are their own business, and its the bands responsibility to have a product to sell, because its their own music and theyre playing live to advertise it like a billboard would for a product.unfortunately many bands that are original dont realize this and think that they are entertainers... only theyre playing original music and complain theyre not getting paid because they dont realize that playing live is just advertising there product, the music they wrote, for an album they probably havnt recorded or mass produced yet. yes i do think if a band works hard to pack a club in either instance, by giving or selling tickets advertising and putting flyers up and the club is obviously making a big profit, then that original band deserves to get paid, when theyre not a cover band that is hired by the establishment, otherwise its our responsibility to make products to sell and make money, that way, a way any small business would.
