Re: “Decoding Shakespeare

How many kids entering junior high can say they've already helped produce and act in not one, but three Shakespeare plays? Shake it UP is an amazing program that introduces not only the concept of theater but that of Shakespearian drama, comedy, tragedy and history all rolled into one fantastic experience. The kids get to work with enthusiastic mentors in the bodies of willing and committed college students. And it is work - 6 weeks of 4-days-a-week practice and a real live Shakespearian play at the culmination - it is AMAZING to watch. No, it isn't perfect. These kids are 9-12 years old. They aren't supposed to be perfect - but for all that this program is and all that the play has for resources, it IS perfect. Matt Hansen does this not at one elementary but at THREE! It is an impressive feat and he is to be commended. Lowell Principal Paula Bell, one of Idaho's most outstanding administrators helped craft this opportunity with Professor Hansen and she knows first-hand how wonderful it has been for her kids - her "Lowell Shakespearians." Kudos to all involved - what a great community engagement!
