Re: “Idaho 'Solar Roadways' Co. Catches Attention of White House, Bill Nye

I'm super glade this nice couple found away to fund their hobby, but thats all it amounts to. It's deceiving or atleast false advertising to get $ 2 Mill. from people by promising miracle results.

Panels barely collect enough to run LEDs when they are angled at the sun and not blocked by thick glass. They have prototypes they can park a tractor on, but can't show us LEDs on in the day or just simply the solar power generated? What's the use of prototype phase 1?

Even transporting the electricity generated would be to wastefull to make this work.

If these people criticised my research

EEVBLOG
Thunderf00t
electrical engineer David Forbes

I'd listen to them, Why? because I would be the one run out of town with pitch forks when it's an epic failer that wastes $2 mill and $750,000 from FHWA <--Taxes.

Good luck. I really hope I'm wrong for your sake.

Re: “Idaho 'Solar Roadways' Co. Catches Attention of White House, Bill Nye

Thank you Mr. Itsme,

That response was entirely unsatifying. This is basic math and you've produced none of it.

1. You fail to address the fact that SOLAR FREAKING ROADWAYS should produce enough power to make up their cost in actually producing SOLAR POWER, or at least break even

-average roof top insolation at Alamosa, Colorado, is 5.4 kWh/m2/day
@ 0.24 cents/kwh = $4,730.4 over ten years, cost? ~$350 dollars
Solar 101.

2. Addition of LEDS only make this a net loss proposition. Given a cloudy year in Idaho, these things will be drawing more energy from the grid then they produce. You won't save the planet if you require energy to run LEDS, fluoresent paint does with zero electrical imput.

Satifactory response would include:

3. An estimate of solar output from one panel or even better a m2 estimate (he has prototypes, yet hasn't directly run these calculaton). 380 wh/m2/day <-- terrible, yet very generous. Do you have a better estimate?

4. An estimate of running LEDS in comparision to the cost

5. If you ran a company would you give someone 2 millions without these basic calculatons.

Feel free to use my numbering to respond. Or don't and put some more irrelevant non-sense down <-- the later = Epic o_O fail.

Re: “Idaho 'Solar Roadways' Co. Catches Attention of White House, Bill Nye

Oh Ok. I guess I'll just say it louder..

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!LOOK AT THE MATH HOMIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The guy's been working on the project for 10 years, No estimates on what a single panel can produce? Give him 2 million to find out. WHAT?

Step 1 - Calculations!
Step 2 - Concept design
Step 3 - Test concept and calculate efficiencies
Step 4 - Modify, retest, throwout bad hypothesis
Step 5 - Repeat, repeat, repeat
Step 6 - field test
Step 7 - Redesign
Step 8 - Viable product limited to a view useful things

This guy....

Step 1 - Concept design (cool hexagons)
Step 2 - Aquire money from people who only require a cool concept
Step 3 - Uh.. Underpants.. calculat...NA
Step 4 - ...
Step 5 - Magic viable product that can do everything

--> 380 wh/m2/day is the best, most generous calculation I've found.
Thats enought to run the minimum LEDS. NOT enough to run microprocessor, sensors, and melt snow.

Epic o_O fail.

Oh Ok. I guess I'll just say it louder..

!!!!!!!!!!!!!MATH DOESN'T ADD UP HOMIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

380 wh/m2/day <--- best calculations yet estimate give. Perfect days, no LEDs, no snow melting!
Return at @ 0.24C/kwh (standard)
$50 per panel over 10 years?

you think they are $50 a panel? I'd bet they still cost about $300 a panel in high production. Think they'll last $300/50 = 60 years?

Cost of calculations - a white board and a marker .. no no three markers blue, black, red.

Re: “Idaho 'Solar Roadways' Co. Catches Attention of White House, Bill Nye

The project is not feasible because of math yo.. What do you have against math? Is it the devil's work or something?

380 wh/m2/day is not enough to make up the cost. That's less then $50 a panel over 10 years! Minus the LEDS or the laughable snow melting! Microprocessor, solar panels, and LEDs are expensive and won't last longer than 10 years.

That number is generous beyound generous. Realist for California summer all year long, not Idaho.

Note the lack of math in any of his talks or his website.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WHERE'S THE MATH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Itsme.. I vet science for breakfast mate! I vet science while I read other science. Vetting science is my job and I'm damn good at it.

Again, why waste money when the math already doesn't make it.
380 wh/m2/day = fail
