Re: “Yes, Your Band is Great

Why is it not news to write about a show? As a music editor in Portland (portland tribune, and writer for the mercury, blastless, etc.) we did that all the time to hype, share, promote, explain in plain terms what was coming to town or how to understand the music. It is news.

This was what made Portland!

I strongly disagree with this approach and i find it lazy, negative journalism.

That was what makes Portland a satisfying, supportive place to be an artist. The promoters, writers and editors all believed in the artists! They are highly supportive, and still are. My friend when she was music editor of Billboard she had rules like this, but you write for the Boise Weekly!

Example conversation:

Band member: Hey why don't you write about my band

You: What has your band done lately?

Band member: Well we did X Y and Z things

You: Tell me more about Y

You write that down, find a trend, write a story about three local bands all using brass experimental in their rock music, or whatever.

It just makes things better.
