  • A private airstrip proposed for the Boise Foothills won't go forward after county officials granted an appeal from the city to reject the project.

In a 2-1 vote, the Ada County Commission granted an appeal Aug. 10 to officially deny permission for construction of a private airstrip in the Boise Foothills.

The full commission heard the appeal by the city of Boise after Ada County Planning and Zoning approved the airstrip in May.

Ada County Commissioners Jim Tibbs and Rick Yzaguirre voted to approve the appeal, with the dissenting vote coming from Commissioner Dave Case.

"It comes down to property rights," Case said.

Property owner Dean Hilde's plan to build a 1,200-foot-long airstrip on his almost 150-acre parcel in the foothills near Table Rock has kicked up controversy for months, with the Boise City Council voting unanimously in April to oppose the project. It also received pushback from Boise Fire Chief Dennis Doan, who said his department would not respond to a fire at Hilde's property, which is on land in an unincorporated area of Ada County.
